Al Islami Foods sets up European hub to reach $16 billion halal food market

Al Islami Foods sets up European hub to reach $16 billion halal food market

Posted: 26-09-2007 , 15:25 GMT

Al Islami Foods, a leading halal food producer in the Middle East, today announced a strategic joint venture with 3663 First for Foodservice, a leading foodservice distributor in the UK, which will cater to the British, German and the Benelux markets for Al Islami’s range of healthy halal products. The joint-venture signing ceremony was held in Manchester, UK.

The halal market in Europe is worth US$ 16 billion (AED 58.76 billion). Al Islami Foods, with the start of operations at year-end, expects US$80 million sales in first year (2008) and estimates US$600 million (AED 2.22 billion) in next five years. Al Islami-3663 joint venture, on a later stage, will cater to Muslim communities in the continental Europe in a bid to create Al Islami’s “Real Halal” benchmark in the industry

Al Islami UK has already set up a processing unit in Manchester which is expected to start the production in November 2007. The unit will be capable of producing 600 tonnes of fresh and frozen meat a month.

Saleh Abdullah Lootah, chief executive officer of Al Islami Foods, stated: “In today’s sophisticated world, halal has become a global phenomenon, which is creating unprecedented demand for halal products. Adhering to the social responsibility standards, Al Islami is committed to providing Real Halal food to the people of all religions across the world.”

3663 First for Foodservice is the UK's leading foodservice company with sales of over US$2 billion (AED 7.36 billion) a year. The company delivers quality ingredients, finished products and equipment to the food industry. In all, over 6,800 people manage 1.84 million square feet of storage in 40 depots across the United Kingdom. A modern fleet of 1,100 vehicles delivers to over 50,000 customers in the UK.

The British company said it had chosen Al Islami because of its strong credentials. It hopes to avoid the controversy over UK’s domestic halal standards, which have come under fire from Muslim groups across the United Kingdom.

“Al Islami has strong business credentials,” said 3663 chief executive Fred Barnes. “It has been producing halal meat ranges since the early 1970s and the company conforms to the exacting standards we demand from our business partners.”

Colgate - Halal Toothpaste

Colgate Toothpaste FAQs
Regarding Colgate Toothpaste sold in Malaysia

Colgate Toothpaste sold in Malaysia is and has always been Halal.
• Colgate Toothpaste is manufactured to Halal standards.
• Colgate Toothpaste does not contain animal ingredients or alcohol.

JAKIM acknowledges that Colgate Toothpaste is certified as Halal.
JAKIM acknowledges that Colgate Toothpaste is certified Halal by Islamic Bodies recognized by JAKIM as follows: Central Islamic Committee of Thailand, The Islamic Community of Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), China Islamic Association (China) and Federation of Muslims Associations of Brazil (Brazil).

To read JAKIM’s statement on Colgate Toothpaste, please go to www.halaljakim.gov.my

Colgate Toothpaste will now carry the Halal seal.
• Colgate Toothpaste packs displaying the Halal seal are in production now and will be entering the market very soon.

• Colgate toothpaste is classified as a pharmaceutical product by the Malaysia Ministry of Health and therefore had not been permitted by MOH to display the Halal seal. Realizing that this was causing consumer confusion, Colgate petitioned for, and was granted, special approval to place the seal on pack. So after 50 years of being Halal in Malaysia, Colgate toothpaste will now display the seal.

The Halal seal on Colgate Toothpaste will be a JAKIM recognized seal.
Current JAKIM policy allows only products produced in Malaysia to carry the JAKIM seal. There is no standard seal for products produced outside Malaysia. Colgate Toothpaste will either carry the seal of the JAKIM recognized Islamic Body from its country of origin or a generic seal; all of which have been shared with JAKIM prior to use.

Colgate toothpaste does not contain animal ingredients or alcohol.
• Both the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Affairs and JAKIM have independently tested Colgate Toothpaste and confirmed that the products do not contain animal DNA or alcohol.

• The calcium in Colgate toothpaste is sourced from minerals.

• The glycerin in Colgate toothpaste is sourced from plants.

What is Halal?

What is Halal?

Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. The opposite of Halal is Haram, which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and Haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, food ingredients, and food contact materials.

While many things are clearly Halal or clearly Haram, there are some things which are not clear. These items are considered questionable or suspect and more information is needed to categorize them as Halal or Haram. Such items are often referred to as Mashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable.

All foods are considered Halal except the following, which are Haram:
• Swine/pork and its by-products
• Animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering
• Animals killed in the name of anyone other than ALLAH (God)
• Alcohol and intoxicants
• Carnivorous animals, birds of prey and land animals without external ears
• Blood and blood by-products
• Foods contaminated with any of the above products

Foods containing ingredients such as gelatin, enzymes, emulsifiers, etc. are questionable (Mashbooh) because the origin of these ingredients is not known.

Halal Baby Food

Halal Baby Food

Two British companies are bent on closing a gap in the prepared foods market—halal baby food. Up until recently, certified halal meat-based baby foods weren’t available. Because of this, Muslim mothers often delayed the switch from milk to solids, leading to babies developing iron and protein deficiencies. This isn't just a problem in non-Muslim countries, where halal food is often less readily available. According to a report by the Nutrition Unit of the World Health Organization, the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in Middle Eastern infants is high – up to 70% in some parts of the region (source: Maktoob Business).

Mumtaz Foods Industries offers ten varieties of baby food suitable for infants from 4 to 7+ months old, including Potato, Lamb & Spinach, and Spring Vegetables and Chicken. GEM Food's Petit Gems comes in culture-spanning flavours, from Vegetable & Roast Beef to Middle-Eastern Lamb Tagine.

Aimed at Muslim parents who want the convenience of prepared baby food without compromising their religious beliefs, halal baby foods should do well both in Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Mumtaz Baby Food is currently available in selected supermarkets and drugstores in the United Kingdom and in Carrefour supermarkets in Saudi Arabia, with other Gulf Region countries to follow this year. GEM Food's Petit Gems is sold in the UK and France. Two to partner with or distribute! With an estimated 1.4 billion Muslims world-wide, this is hardly a niche market ;-)

Moscow Wants Muslim Food in Each District

Moscow Wants Muslim Food in Each District

MOSCOW (AFP) - Moscow city council members plan to support the opening of a chain of halal stores selling food products prepared in accordance with Muslim tradition, a councillor said Tuesday.

The head of the council's religious and ethnic affairs committee, Igor Yeleferenko, said the committee had been approached for help by the Russian Council of Muftis.

He said the appearance of halal shops would also help foster tolerance. "We should support representatives of all religious and ethnic groups. It means non-believers too will be able to buy wonderful fresh and tasty products," Yeleferenko told AFP.

While details are still being worked out, the idea is that every district of Russia's capital should eventually have at least one halal shop, he said. Planning assistance might be needed from the city council because such shops are unlikely to have the bargaining power of larger supermarket chains, he said.

Halal rules forbid among other things the consumption of pork, blood, land-dwelling carnivorous animals and alcohol. Yeleferenko said the shops would provide greater opportunities for non-Muslims to learn about Muslim culture, as they would be located outside the confines of mosque complexes. "The more people learn about the traditions of others the less they will be fearful," he said.

Members of Muslim minorities in Moscow have been subject to racist attacks, the victims often being from southern Russia or neighbouring central Asian and Caucasus states. Almost 10 percent of Russia's population are thought to be Muslims, although Yeleferenko was unable to provide a statistic for Moscow itself.

21 - Saudi government to assist ARMM on halal certification

21 - Saudi government to assist ARMM on halal certification

Provincial
Government officials of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have committed to assist the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) on their application for Halal Certification when they participated in the ARMM business conference, which was held early this month in Cotabato City.

Vicente Lao, chair of the Mindanao Business Council, disclosed in a recent media forum that KSA officials who were joined by Sheik Fayez Hammed Zainy during the ARMM Business Conference expressed commitment to help the ARMM have its Halal Certification get the much-needed approval that will be recognized internationally.

He also said that private groups led by Zainy are expected to revisit Mindanao in November where they will bring with them Saudi-based Halal certifying officers to check on the current ARMM Halal Certification.

Lao said, once the certifying officers determine that the ARMM Halal Certification is good, Zainy, who owns Abbar and Zainy Corporation, known to be the 4th biggest cold chain company in the world, will immediately ship poultry products from here to KSA.

Halal chicken, he said, is one project the ARMM is embarking on, and targets the Middle East market where the industry per year is worth several billions.

The Middle East, he said, can only produce 50 percent and half of that is being sourced out from other areas like Brazil and France.

"Our chance of getting a slice of the market is there and if we don't have plans for this, somebody else will," he said. (PNA)
